Dronfield Junior School motto: acheiving whilst making learning fun

Governors

Role of the Governing Body

Welcome to the Governors' page of the website. The aim of the page is to tell parents who we are and what we do.

The Governing Body consists of local people who have an active interest in the school as parents, staff, or as members of the local Dronfield Community. Parent Governors are elected by parents and other governors are appointed by the local authority usually on the recommendation of the governors. The majority of the governors at Dronfield Junior School are either parents of children currently at the school or of former pupils. It is a voluntary and unpaid role and we are always keen to encourage new governors.

The Governors’ role at the school is to help make the strategic decisions to move the school forward. In addition the Governors scrutinize the work of the school, particularly the standards of achievement, to ensure the school is effectively educating the pupils and preparing them for their futures. We do this both through our regular full governors’ meetings or as committees and by regular visits into school to look at different aspects of the curriculum.

In order for the Governors to carry out our role effectively, we have separate committees to oversee the leadership and management of the school. These include Curriculum, Personnel, Finance, Premises and Performance Management.

Meet the governors

John Harvey – Chair of Governors

We came to Dronfield over 40 years ago and probably for half that time I have been a governor at the school. I came on to the governors as a Local Authority governor mainly because this is my local school and it is the school to which both our children came. Over the years the role has become more demanding as more responsibilities were placed on governors but the nice thing about our governors is that we share the work and I think we support each other well. A school is a very important part of a local community and in our case we have been here since 1875 when we were the first Board school in the town.

Richard Gilson - Vice Chair of Governors

My name is Richard Gilson, I have been on the Governing Body for 6 Years I joined as a Parent Governor and I am currently a LA Governor.

I like to be involved with school activities as much as possible and this year have helped at the sports day.  I am on the Curriculum and Premises Committees.  I am also a governor at the Infants school and provide the link between the two governing bodies.

I enjoy being a Governor and I am committed to maintaining the high standards of Education the school provides.

John Fletcher

I have been involved with Dronfield Junior School for a number of years as both parent governor and LEA governor, which I continue to find both enjoyable and rewarding. As governors, we get a great insight into the running of the school, and an in-depth appreciation of the dedication, professionalism and hard work of all staff employed by the school, to the benefit of all the children.

I hold a number of roles on the Governor team, which includes vice-chair, chair of the premises committee, as well as a being a member of the finance and personnel committees, and I am part of the Head’s Performance Review team. I also sit on the joint Infant and Junior School’s road safety committee.

Liz Bashforth

I have been a governor at Dronfield Juniors for over 10 years. My son was a pupil at the school when I started! I am on the Curriculum Committee which is especially interesting as it involves coming into school to talk to the children about what they are doing. I also go on school trips, attend different events and am involved in the Anti-Bullying Group.

Wendy Temple

I am a currently a Community Governor, having been co-opted onto the governing body following two terms as a parent governor.

My main role on the governing body is as Child Protection Governor and also member of the Performance Management Committee. I also serve on the Personnel, Finance and Premises Committee.

Katherine Shaw - parent governor

I am a parent governor who has had 2 children at this school. Both are now at The Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School. I am a member of the premises committee and I have a special interest in the gardens around the school for which the school won a Dronfield in Bloom Award for 2014.

Sarah Sinclair - Parent governor

My name is Sarah Sinclair and I was pleased to be elected as parent governor in Spring 2014. I have two sons, one at Dronfield Juniors and one at Dronfield Infants.

I am looking forward to sitting on the Curriculum Committee. I have a particular interest in the school's creative literacy curriculum and especially how it engages boys.

I hope parents will contact me should they have any questions or issues they wish me to put forward.7

Christopher Seller -

My role as a member of the governing body will take advantage of relevant skills that I have acquired during 36 years in industry where I was involved in health & safety management (NEBOSH qualified), quality and computer systems along with some purchasing and costings.  As such I have joined the premises and road safety committees and will soon be receiving governor training in strategic planning and finance. In my employment I had responsibilities to various meetings (senior management, works committee and chair of the systems review) and am fully aware of the need for excellent working relationships with all parties and being part of a team.  I also had to deal with many external agencies. My daughter was at Dronfield Junior School from 2008 to 2012 and my son has just started; it is clear that very high standards have been consistently achieved and I will be proud to part of the Governing body in maintaining these.  I particularly enjoy reading and music and can assist in these areas along with mathematics.

Kate Ward - Parent governor

I have been parent Governor at DJS since the autumn of 2015. I have a daughter in year 3 and I am currently employed as Midday Supervisor at Dronfield Infant School. I recently received the NVQ level 2 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, and I serve on the Curriculum and Personnel committees. I am due to begin my NVQ level 3 TA qualification, and hope to use this knowledge and experience to support the work of the Governing body and the school.

Nicola Thomson - Headteacher/Governor

My role is to fully inform the Governing Body over the safeguarding and achievement of all pupils. Using the information, Governors ask me questions about the performance of the school, including the quality of leadership and teaching. I encourage the Governors to come into school regularly to see the work of the school first hand.

Esther Edwards - Clerk to governors

Tony Burrows - Non teaching staff governor
