Governors

Role of the Governing Body

Welcome to the Governors' page of the website. The aim of the page is to tell parents who we are and what we do.

The Governing Body consists of local people who have an active interest in the school as parents, staff, or as members of the local Dronfield Community. Parent Governors are elected by parents and other governors are appointed by the local authority usually on the recommendation of the governors. The majority of the governors at Dronfield Junior School are either parents of children currently at the school or of former pupils. It is a voluntary and unpaid role and we are always keen to encourage new governors.

The Governors’ role at the school is to help make the strategic decisions to move the school forward. In addition the Governors scrutinize the work of the school, particularly the standards of achievement, to ensure the school is effectively educating the pupils and preparing them for their futures. We do this both through our regular full governors’ meetings or as committees and by regular visits into school to look at different aspects of the curriculum.

In order for the Governors to carry out our role effectively, we have separate committees to oversee the leadership and management of the school. These include Curriculum, Personnel, Finance, Premises and Performance Management.

Richard Gilson - Chair of Governors

My name is Richard Gilson, I have been on the Governing Body for 6 Years I joined as a Parent Governor and I am currently a LA Governor.

I like to be involved with school activities as much as possible and this year have helped at the sports day.  I am on the Curriculum and Premises Committees.  I am also a governor at the Infants school and provide the link between the two governing bodies.

I enjoy being a Governor and I am committed to maintaining the high standards of Education the school provides.

Liz Bashforth - Co-opted

I have been a governor at Dronfield Juniors for over 10 years. My son was a pupil at the school when I started! I am on the Curriculum Committee which is especially interesting as it involves coming into school to talk to the children about what they are doing. I also go on school trips, attend different events and am involved in the Anti-Bullying Group.

Lisa Mather - Parent Governor

I have three children, one at DHFS, one at the Juniors and a younger child, who will hopefully attend the school in the future.  A former student of Dronfield Junior School, I am now a Physiotherapist working with stroke survivors.  I am also an Assistant Beaver Scout Leader in the local area.

As a community Physiotherapist and Beaver Leader, I am experienced in team working, problem solving and prioritisation, whilst operating within these legal guidelines including confidentiality and safeguarding.  I feel these are skills that would enable me to be a valued member of the governing board for Dronfield Junior School.

I recognise the importance of supporting mental and physical health to allow pupils to achieve their maximum potential academically and to promote long term individual wellbeing.  This is something the school is already doing and I am keen to ensure this continues and progresses.  I enjoy running myself and recognise the many advantages an active lifestyle can have on everyday life.

Jenny Cartwright - Parent Governor

I currently have a son at DJS so feel the timing is right to put myself forward for the role of parent governor.  I grew up in Dronfield and attended Dronfield Junior School, so I have a strong attachment to both the school and community.  I really like the fact that the staff at Dronfield Juniors always seem to have the best interests of the children at the heart of everything they do, and I would love to help support them as a parent governor to ensure that this continues.

Professionally, I work for the Department of Education, and as such am passionate about improving educational standards.  As part of my current role, I work with under performing schools, which involves analysing school level data, interpreting Ofsted reports and providing challenge.  I believe I can bring the skills and experience gained through my work to the governing body, whilst being there purely in a parent governor capacity.

Through my work, I recognise the importance of a strong governing body to provide support to the headteacher and leadership team to continue to run the school effectively, but at the same time, holding them to account.  I would like the opportunity to work directly with the school, as I know how important the early school years can be and how much of a potential influence it has on the development of our children.

Karen Bull - Vice Chair of Governors

My name is Karen Bull. I have lived in Dronfield for 44 years and I have been a Governor at Dronfield Junior School for over 20 years. I started as a Parent Governor when both my children were at school. I am currently a co-opted Governor and I am chair of the curriculum committee, SEN Governor and Maths Governor.

I am passionate that the children get the best possible education and opportunities that they can, in order to help them to reach their full potential. As a Governor I have been involved in interviewing for new teachers and staff. I am usually in school at least once a week as a volunteer and often help out on trips and visits.

We have a good team of governors who work well together and share the workload. I am happy for parents to contact me through the school if they have any questions or issues they would like to discuss.

Jill Tingle - Co-opted Governor

Ruth De Almeida - Teaching Staff Governor

I have worked at the school for a long time teaching Spanish, running the choir and PPA cover.

Caroline Leah - Non-Teaching Staff Governor

I joined Dronfield Junior School as a Teaching Assistant in March 2019 and became a Non-Teaching Governor in September 2019.  I am on the Curriculum and Finance Committees.

Nicola Thomson - Headteacher/Governor

My role is to fully inform the Governing Body over the safeguarding and achievement of all pupils. Using the information, Governors ask me questions about the performance of the school, including the quality of leadership and teaching. I encourage the Governors to come into school regularly to see the work of the school first hand.

Liz Cooper - Clerk to governors
